Buying a car? Vauxhall Astra given top safety marks | Motoring News | Honest John

Buying a car in the new year could be a great idea – but thinking about safety levels is always a priority for many drivers.

With this in mind, the ratings recently given to the new Vauxhall Astra could be encouraging.

Euro NCAP awarded it five stars, which is the top score available.

Particular attention was paid to the car’s active head restraints, which the manufacturer said protect against whiplash and do not require resetting after a collision.

The passenger compartment was another factor in the high score, Vauxhall explained, as this is designed to provide the biggest "survival space" if a crash were to occur.

Six airbags, ABS, adaptive brake lights, airbag deactivation settings and traction control are some of the other gadgets and gizmos included in the new Astra aimed at improving safety.

According to the carmaker, the motor provides overall "outstanding crash performance".

Those buying a car in the coming months may also want to check out the Mazda3, which was another five-star receiver.
