They got the Clarkson treatment on Sunday, elevated virtually to works of art. But the three I watched go under the hammer today looked like masses of motor for the money.
The one in the photo was an 18k mile 02 reg 2.2DCI Privilege manual with woven cloth seats. It sold for £7,800. Another with 21k miles on a 2002/52 reg sold for £7,850. While a 10k mile 2002/52 2.0T petrol Privilege manual sold for £7,700.
Contrast that with what Leaseplan’s 2002/51 reg MINI Coopers were making in the next door hall. They were all the same spec with Pepper pack and tlc service contracts, but the cheapest, a 49k miler, sold for £7,850; a 23k miler sold for £8,400 and the vendor seemed to want at least that for the others which had between 23k and 35k miles.
The two Avantimes in the Renault section did better than the Vel Satis, perhaps reflecting their predicted ‘future classic’ status. The green 32k mile 02 reg 2.0T manual bid to £8,500 wile the much nicer red 40k mile 2002/52 2.0T manual sold for £8,950.
A pair of 2003/53 reg Espace 1.9DCI Authentiques with 12k and 14k miles made £11,700 each. An 11k mile 2003/53 Grand Espace 3.5V6 petrol Initiale auto sold for £16,800. A 51k mile 2002/51 reg RenaultSport Clio 3.0V6 with the old front sold for £13,600. And French Racing Blue 4k mile 04 reg RenaultSport Clio 182 Cup sold for £9,800.
Back on the Leaseplan cars new model blight didn’t help a 14k mile 04 reg Porsche Boxster 3.2S Tiptronic that ran out of bids at £28,100. Cheap cars included a 105k mile facelift 2001X Passat 2.0 Sport with a horn problem which sold for £3,700, an 83k mile 2001Y Mercedes E320CDI Avant Garde which sold for £11,200, a 64k mile Y reg Honda Civic 1.7 VTEC Coupe which sold for £4,700, a 125k mile 2000W Avensis 2.0SR which sold for £2,200 and a 71k mile 2001/51 reg Mondeo TDDI 115 Zetec estate which sold for £5,375. A 137k mile 92 reg SEAT Alhambra TDI 115 S with 13 stamps in the book wasn’t cheap at £7,000.
At the other end of the auction, a 129k mile 98R Mondeo 1.8GLX sold for £500, a 36k mile 2000W RHD VW Beetle 2.0i sold for £5,550 and an 80k mile BMW Z3 1.9 Roadster sold for £6,700.
