300SL Makes European Record at H&H Auction | Motoring News | Honest John


A stunning silver 1959 Mercedes 300SL with good history and desirable disc brake conversion, conservatively estimated at £100,000 to £120,000 sold for a European record price of £174,100 + commission at H&H’s Classic Car Auction at Pavilion Gardens Buxton on 19th February. It was “was purchased by a prominent European dealer on behalf of an unnamed client”, possibly Mercedes Benz itself as the company certainly knew that the car was coming up for sale at H&H.

Altogether fifty-one cars changed hands for a sale total of £620,000 before commission. Other interesting results included: Ex-Elton John 1987 Ferrari Testarossa at £37,700; restored 1966 Austin Healey 3000 BJ8 at a very high £31,200; 1963 Lagonda Rapide at £23,750; 1936 Austin York at a high £14,600; 1950 Riley RMC 2.5 litre Roadster in need of recommissioning at £14,400; 1964 Lotus Elan S2 Drophead at £13,700

Next H&H sale on April 9th 2003 at Pavilion Gardens, Buxton followed by H&H’s first sale at Olympia II, London on 7th May 2003.

BCA also sold some interesting cars at its classic auction at Blackbushe on 10th February, These included a 1958 Jaguar XK150 FHC at £19,900; an export spec 1958 XK150 Roadster at £25,150; a 1960 XK150 S FHC needing complete restoration at £6,950; a time warp 39,500 mile 1961 Ford Zodiac Mk II with period extras at £6,200; a 1969 Jaguar E-Type Roadster at £19,800; and the oldest car in the sale, a 1925 Renault NN Tourer at £5,695.
